Almost every deploy tool on the market — Heroku, Render, Railway, Forge, Ploi, RunCloud — charges monthly, forever, for as long as your app is live. That model makes sense when the vendor is hosting your infrastructure: ongoing compute costs them money, so they charge you ongoing. It makes a lot less sense for a tool that doesn't host anything.
What DeployOS actually is
DeployOS is a desktop app that talks to a VPS you already own, over SSH. There's no server-side component running your app, no shared infrastructure DeployOS is paying to operate on your behalf, and no marginal cost to Anthropic— to us, sorry — per additional deploy you run. The compute cost is entirely yours, paid directly to whichever VPS provider you chose, at VPS prices, not PaaS markup.
Given that, charging a recurring fee for a desktop app that isn't hosting anything for you felt like renting something we weren't actually providing on an ongoing basis.
The model we landed on
A one-time license purchase per tier (Free / Solo / Pro), which includes a year of updates. After that year, continuing to get new features/fixes is an optional renewal at roughly half the original price — but the version you own keeps working. Nothing about your license expiring turns off your already-deployed apps; it only affects whether you're eligible for the next round of updates.
Why not just "free forever, open source"
We considered it. The honest answer is that building and maintaining the native SSH engine, the Traefik/Caddy automation, the backup/restore pipeline, and the template library is ongoing work, and a one-time purchase is what funds that without needing to extract value from you every single month for a tool that isn't hosting your infrastructure.
The trade-off, stated plainly
You're paying more upfront than a $0 open-source tool, and less over any time horizon longer than about a year compared to a subscription-based equivalent. If you're the kind of founder who's tracking total cost of ownership over a 2-3 year horizon (which, if you're reading a post about VPS economics, you probably are), the math tends to favor "pay once" pretty quickly.
